[IBC] Jap Maple Structure cut
When in doubt, wait. But there is nothing to doubt about here, because the
best time to do heavy pruning is spring. Plant the tree in the ground, sprinkle some camphor around the base ( to kill off any unseen borers), and wait until spring to transplant. Marty ----- Original Message ----- From: "Theo" To: Sent: Saturday, October 11, 2003 8:07 AM Subject: [IBC] Jap Maple Structure cut HI I bought last spring an acer palmatum that had borers.. it is ok by now.. but as was grown in plain earth had the main branches brutally chopped.. actually there are 3 of them that I wish to cut completely away.. each is about 3 inches long and l 2/3 inch thick.. The ends of these 3 budded abundantly but buds are badly located , I let them grow between 1-3 ft long to let roots grow well as i had some cut as unaesthetic .. Now after leaves will fall down I have to decide what to do : A- leave the whole branches as they are and wait the spring to cut them for cuttings ,and saw at the same time the 3 thick stumps ( in May when all buds are out and sap flowing for a quicker cicatrization B- or do it now in Nov Dec when all leaves are fallen? I wish at the same time ( in November) to take away some of his soil that is 90% gravel ( fear of frost) and put the plant for growing into a flat wooden box to stimulate growth and nebari for the next 2 years Because of that gravel the roots are very thin and frizzy so do not need pruning right now the tree will be mainly displaced into Akadama and sfagnum in the wooden box. So what do you advice? Thanks for the advices Theo ************************************************** ************************** **** ++++Sponsored, in part, by Lisa Kanis++++ ************************************************** ************************** **** -- The IBC HOME PAGE & FAQ: http://www.internetbonsaiclub.org/ -- +++++ Questions? I did not know about camphor.. where do you get it '
synthetic in tablets or wood-camphor? Crushed mothballs, or granular mothproofing product. "Theo" wrote in message ... HI Jim you crush 'em into chunks and mix them with the soil than! Thanks Theo No. I'd crush them and then scatter it around the pots on the tabletop (or floor). I don't think I'd want this stuff watered into the roots, but maybe someone knows more about it than I do (actually, I'm sure they do). I wow I see.. because if it is natural it is like resin I guess as Mirrah that I use mixed with wax and pine sap for covering the cuts on the bark, and in this case probably not dangerous for theeh roots.. but if from synthesis is another story .. I will have it on tabletop than .. Will give tomorrow Marshall, is an insepticide against borers it is absorbed by roots and will poison the bark in case some borer might be still alive. Thanks again for the clarification Theo Jim Lewis - - Tallahassee, FL - The phrase 'sustainable growth' is an oxymoron. - Stephen Viederman |
