[IBC] Canada Questions
Both those people are probably growing the trees indoors.
Monterey cypress is hardy to about Zone 9, so you can't grow it outdoors, except in Vancouver. However, it needs very high humidity. If it is turning brown, it is probably dead. Chinese privet is Ligustrum sinense. It is hardy to Zone 7, which means it should probably be outdoors most of the year, with a protected dormant period in the winter. [IBC] Canada Questions
How happy I am those didn't come to *my* plant doctor site!
If you get a lot of these questions, you might want to plagiarize my diagnostic form, forcing these people to put down information on whether the tree is in or out, how they water, what cultural practices they have practiced, etc. It saves you from badger ing them for these answers later. I can't properly answer those questions without that information, but the privet ought to be outdoors, not indoors. -----Original Message----- Date: Mon Mar 01 14:04:58 EST 2004 From: "Ian Young" Subject: [IBC] Canada Questions To: A couple of questions have been asked on my clubs Bonsai Doctor service on the web-site. Both are from Canada and involve trees I don't have knowledge of. (I know what to do with Chinese Privet over here but I was unsure that youe Chinese Privet is the s ame as ours!!) I would appreciate some input from the North Americans here. Thanks in Advance Regards Ian www.nibonsaisociety.co.uk Question 1 Question: Hi thank you for the opportunity to ask for some advice. I recieved a 3yr old Monterey Cypress as a Christmas gift and it is very ill. The branches are going brown from the stem out. Could this be from over watering/not enough? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks Question 2 Question: just bought a chinese privet in good shape. when i bought it i was told that when you put your finger in the soil it was to damp and should not water it to soon. i put my finger in the soil just after and it didn't feel damp at all. to keep t he same dampness as when bought, i would water about every two or sometime three days. now the leaves are shriveled and falling off very fast. i started to water it every day for the past three days because i think what the person told me was wrong. what kind of care should i give to this tree? ************************************************** ****************************** ++++Sponsored, in part, by Ken Rutledge++++ ************************************************** ****************************** -- The IBC HOME PAGE & FAQ: http://www.internetbonsaiclub.org/ -- +++++ Questions?
