Yup, beer is a great idea and works well.

Also, I believe that the little rascals have an aversion to copper. If
you put a ring of copper wire surrounding the outside of the plants,
or even place some pennies around the edges, they'll steer clear.

The benefit of copper over beer is that you can drink the beer
yourself, rather than give the pests the tasty drink.
