Default roots

Hi Everybody

Some of the first bonsai books I read suggested that roots thicken faster if
covered by soil. However, I've seen it said somewhere (bonsai gallery?) that
the poster was going to expose the roots to allow them to fatten.

Can anybody enlighten me??

Thanks

ss
