[IBC] Bonsai security, anyone do it?
Hi everyone.
snip So it raised the issue of security. They are in the back yard, which is fenced, and maybe I am being paranoid, but it doesn't really stop any wanderers/peering eyes from seeing them, hence stealing them. snip wondering if anyone had security for them. Apart from a dog that is. Actually, a medium- to large-size dog is probably the simplest and most effective form of security. I have a front yard, deep woods in back and 2 pastures, so all of my trees are in FRONT of my house (of course, we're set back from the road about 900 feet and can't be seen from the road). Posted along my drive are 2 signs: "Doberman Crossing" and "French Bulldog Crossing." Now, no one in their right mind would be afraid of a French Bulldog (but some folks are [?]). The Doberman is another issue. She's a patsy, but no one knows that -- and she barks at strangers in a superb basso profundo and glares balefully at tradesmen (and women). Even a smallish dog is often sufficient -- especially if it will bark at odd noises in the yard. Posted this one to Andrew direct but it bounced :-(
It does pay to give it a lot of thought. It happens to the best even with high security. I know that one Italian master has a high chain fence and this was breached to steal trees. One British owner at the forefront has two Alsations and high fences/intruder alarms and has suffered losses in the past. Two members of our 60 strong club have had all of their trees stolen. One gave up and the other has installed as much security as possible since. I suppose if you are a "masterclass" bonsaiest you need machine guns. I forgot to mention that we also have security lights (and after bedtime, loud beeps) that are motion activated -- aimed a few feet off the ground so the raccoons, possums, armadillo, dogs, and small deer don't set them off -- but those aren't specifically for the trees but for the general paranoia of the times. A pair of the above could be a couple of thousand dollars. My lurchers (saluki x whippet) are certainly more valuable than my trees. They are loyal pals to me, and lovely house dogs. They sleep on armchairs, by the window overlooking my rear garden. I also employ methods from Kev's article. I need to consider footballs and random objects from over hedges and fences too, so my benches need some sort of canopy. regards, Richard ************************************************* ******************************* ++++Sponsored, in part, by Chris Cochrane++++ ************************************************* ******************************* -- The IBC HOME PAGE & FAQ: http://www.internetbonsaiclub.org/ -- +++++ Questions?
