Default [IBC] FW: [IBC] Bonsai security, anyone do it?

Posted this one to Andrew direct but it bounced :-(

It does pay to give it a lot of thought. It happens to the best even
with high security. I know that one Italian master has a high chain
fence and this was breached to steal trees. One British owner at the
forefront has two Alsations and high fences/intruder alarms and has
suffered losses in the past. Two members of our 60 strong club have had
all of their trees stolen. One gave up and the other has installed as
much security as possible since.

Hope you find my article useful.

Cheers

Hi everyone.
Making progress for final displaying places for my bonsai.
Currently they are on a bench/benches in one small area of the garden,
recently raised from ground level where they sat with some other potted
plants, and bonsai in training pots.
Now they really stand out, and they will when the area I am building for
them is finished.
So it raised the issue of security.
They are in the back yard, which is fenced, and maybe I am being
paranoid,
but it doesn't really stop any wanderers/peering eyes from seeing them,
hence stealing them.
I guess it's the fact they stand out that I have noticed this. That and
the
fact someone told me that in nearby Sydney some people were.......
actually
I won't say it as to not give any undesireables ideas, but yeah, theft
around there is actually a problem and big market for it.
Really, our bonsai are in the best area for them, and can't/don't want
to
tuck them away in some hidden shady corner.
I can imagine some people here have the most beautiful bonsai and
wondering
if anyone had security for them. Apart from a dog that is.
I have a few ideas such as a infrared activated alarm, fencing with
razor
wire atop, though a little ugly for a nice display. Then possibly
another
which may be a little crude so I won't mention it. Maybe it's all
overkill,
but something to stop people from being able to carry them away would be
nice.
We haven't had any problems with theft of anything in the immediate
area,
that I'm aware of, still being cautious about it.
Any suggestions?

Actually, a medium- to large-size dog is probably the simplest
and most effective form of security.

I have a front yard, deep woods in back and 2 pastures, so all of
my trees are in FRONT of my house (of course, we're set back from
the road about 900 feet and can't be seen from the road).

Posted along my drive are 2 signs:

"Doberman Crossing" and "French Bulldog Crossing." Now, no one
in their right mind would be afraid of a French Bulldog (but some
folks are [?]). The Doberman is another issue. She's a patsy,
but no one knows that -- and she barks at strangers in a superb
basso profundo and glares balefully at tradesmen (and women).

Even a smallish dog is often sufficient -- especially if it will
bark at odd noises in the yard.

I suppose if you are a "masterclass" bonsaiest you need machine
guns.

I forgot to mention that we also have security lights (and after
bedtime, loud beeps) that are motion activated -- aimed a few
feet off the ground so the raccoons, possums, armadillo, dogs,
and small deer don't set them off -- but those aren't
specifically for the trees but for the general paranoia of the
times.

whose trees would fit in a pocket.

Just beware that your dogs don't become the object of the thieves
attention. A pair of the above could be a couple of thousand dollars.

My lurchers (saluki x whippet) are certainly more valuable than my
trees. They are loyal pals to me, and lovely house dogs. They sleep on
armchairs, by the window overlooking my rear garden.

I also employ methods from Kev's article.

I need to consider footballs and random objects from over hedges and
fences too, so my benches need some sort of canopy.

regards,
Richard

Thank you very much for the article, and to those who posted. Sorry, but my
email addy is now invalid due to large amounts of spam. Will post a new one
soon.
Anyway I now have a few more ideas now, so thanks.
We aren't really keen on having a dog, for various reasons, though it would
be good. The yard is secured, however doesn't stop people jumping the fence.
Thankfully on one side of our house is a yard that's sunken, so hard to look
over the fence. This place bothers me as it's a rented house, and nobody
seems to stay there long, in poor condtion, so cheap to rent, therefore
attracting some undesireables. Other side of us has nice old people who have
known me for the past 28yrs (my whole life) and over the back is a
retirement village and most of the back yard along our fence has a garden
shed, and large workshed.

Anyway, thanks again.
