Here in the north bay (northern California), lava 'sand' is left over from
the rock place screening out other sizes for landscape use.
What is left is all of the fines, I buy that and bring it home then wash it
out thru used window screen to get one eighth thru one quarter or so.
The streets run red for weeks after this but the winter rains will finally
wash it all away.
