Herbs of various sorts are on topic for the group.

Let's see if I understand hops correctly - Like apples they do not breed
true so if you grow them from seed there is a very low chance the plant
will grow hops that taste good brewed into beer. As a result nearly all
hops are grown from cuttings or root stock of known good plants.

The good news is that hops grow like weeds from root cuttings, so are dead
easy to propagate. And they generally reach the second-story window by
mid-summer!

Like with doctors, I don't always divulge all the information just to see
how good they really are .................

You guys seem to be knowledgeable, so ................

I live at 3700' elev, and am in a 5A USDA agricultural zone. It gets damn
hot here in the summer, and damn cold in the winter, but there are spaces in
between that are just beautiful. Not sure the time to ripeness for hops,
but maybe that additional bit of info may help.

It could be fun, but then, maybe not worth it at the cost of good hops from
all over the world at beer brew sites. AND, the longevity of storage.

As for so much garden stuff, a lot of it is the fun of growing it yourself,
and not actually in cost savings. Unless, of course, one could raise a
strain that was better one way or the other, and grew good in my location.
A few hundred feet of elevation, or a little difference here and there can
make a lot of difference in the final harvest.

Thanks for the info, people.

Beer is liquid bread!
On your hops question, I'm in USDA 5B (Southern Ontario, Canada) but
only at about 1000' elevation.
When I was brewing my own I had 5 different varieties growing on
trellises and they did exceptionally well here. The bines easily
topped out their 14' trellises and kept on growing.
They will spread via underground runners and are very easy to
propagate that way.
I did try ''wet hopping'' but IMO, they don't work well for beer when
freshly picked and must be dried.
You can supposedly make a very effective sleep pillow using hops but I
found when using them to brew beer, the end product was also a very
good sleep aid.

Ross.

And, in Germany it is still referred to as "flussig brot" (liquid bread).
As far as blue bottles, you may enjoy Bombay Sapphire dry gin which
comes in a blue bottle, as does a number of German wines (which are very
affordable). But this is going a bit far a field for "wrecked" edible
gardens.

If you are growing hops as a crop, it is normal with to thin out the young shoots to 1 or 2 per pole. The thinned out young shoots can be cooked and eaten like asparagus. Any later in the season and they will be too tough to use as a vegetable. I do have a hop patch in the garden, for ornamental reasons, and keep on saying I will try it one year, because I read it is delicious.

In regions where the beer is pilsener style, only female hops are grown, and the fruiting bodies are unfertilised. In fact growing a male hop plant is illegal and subject to large fines in some of these regions, since the pollenisation can occur over a distance of up to about 10km, and even a few fertilised fruits will taint the crop. For this reason alone, seeds are not readily available, and propagation must be vegetative in these regions. If you live in such a region, you won't even be able to buy a male hop.

Here in Britain we allow our hops to fraternise, and the hop fruit is fertilised and contains fertile seeds. This has a much more bitter taste, and is one of the factors that makes British ale such a distinctive product from the continental pilseners. Pilseners are manufactured in Britain, but probably they have to import the hops, or more likely a hop extract, to do it.

I wish we had her Grandma's , that part got snippedrecipes , but Dad's
brother snatched all that when
she passed . Along with a lot of other stuff .

Are relations with that line of the family strained or cordial enough
for you to contact whoever now has the recipes and ask if you can
copy them?

They're all Mormons , and to both sides of my family -with the exception
of my one surviving brother- I no longer exist since I left the church .

Even if you don't want to do that, I'm sure you would still be able
to find recipes for the same things she made on the Net. I collect
old cookbooks (in a casual and desultory way) a nd I know those sorts
of recipes and others I'm sure she'd also have made appear in early
to mid 20th century cookbooks.

I might be able to find similar recipes if I looked , but we also have
the wife's family as a source . Most of them are Southern Baptists and
almost as rabid as Mormons , but I haven't alienated them . Yet .

LOL. So, what's stopping you looking for those recipes (other than a touch
of sloth)?

Are you the very same Steve B who recently told another poster to throw
their computer away because they were too stupid to own one? Is that
how people calling themselves Steve B act to demonstrate being civil?

You got the time to go and dig all that old stuff up?

You seriously need to get a life.

Dig? Who needs to 'dig'. You may suffer from short term memory loss but
you wrote your comment only a short time ago so your post is still
showing up on my screen.

And as for my needing to get a life, that tired old attempt at an insult
was exactly what you told the other poster when you told him/her they
were stupid.

Stupid is as stupid does.

Yep. You were very stupid to mention being civil and using common sense
after your recent posting history.

And you're a pompous gasbag who has nothing more to do in life than sit at a
keyboard and **** and moan and gossip.

Kiss off.
