Default Winterizing Figs

I have seen a number of discussions regarding the traditional wrapping of fig plants in northern areas. Apparently the goal is to minimize rapid freezing and thawing and to keep the plant dry. I made an attempt at this last Winter but it did not seem to have any effect on the amount of dieback, so I wonder if anyone has actually tested it by covering only half of their plants?

Thanks
