Default Oh yeah? Well, patch THIS!

Do this weekly rant, see. Mostly I do it simply because I can since it's my
own website and on account of I am in Canada so I do not care about Homeland
SSecurity or who reads what I bloody well write. So if you're bored to tears
and instead of shaving the cat, take a look.

It's even got some weird perspectives on gardening!

Perhaps I think too much but....if today was any indication of just how
things are pee cee wise, I for one wonder if it's all worth it.

Tally for October 15th: Four (4) Critical Updates for XP (and of course you
end up hanging while they install themselves) plus two (2) new Anti-Virus
definitions from Symantec. After installing all that, I did a quick
CleanSweep to delete all the bloat off my perpetually cramped hard drives
and reboot. Seems to me that I do a lot of that sort of thing, revisions of
what was supposed to be a rock-steady, best-ever O/S and of course the daily
game of keeping up with the bad, if savvy guys out there doing their virus
routines. I suppose that it is comforting to know that, by paying my
subscription fees, I am now protected against the havoc that 65.358 assorted
malicious codes could do to my system. Sixty Five Thousand??? Is this a sick
world or what!

And that's just a daily bit. Being somewhat anal, I try to keep my hard
drives tuned, so I run defrag this and doctor that at least once per week.
Do you have any idea how long it takes to defrag 60 gigabytes? If I had much
hair left, I would go and curl it.

And don't even whisper Spam. I have this emotion bordering on hatred for the
spamming scumbags that try to sell me little blue pills or patches or (get
this!) herbal remedies to add inches to my personality. Refinance, get a
bazillion credit cards, a guestpass to porn sites. Itsjohn has been asked if
he would like larger breasts, if he would like to meet his naughty neighbour
(eeeeewwww) and if he wants a free trip. To complete the loop, I am offered
a ceedee filled with 10 billion valid email addies so as I can spam people
myself.

That's the downside of it. On the upside, the weeb is terrific for finding
info, for doing research, for running a small business. Well, terrific is an
overstatement. It used to be a good way to track down that old Jim Reeves
track, going peer-to-peer. Now file swapping has been corrupted by greed and
stupidity to the point where I hardly bother anymore - even if it's 'safe'
to do so in Canada.

Games? I don't play games. Much. And since Jezzball disappeared, who cares.
News? OK, I get my e-news. Perhaps too much news, I dunno. It all seems like
more of the same, different day.

Truth be told, if it was not for Renaissance/Ecologicals, I would be sorely
tempted to shelf this hardware.Got me some good books to read now that the
weather is changing and the focus switched to a comfy chair and a good pot
of stew. Got an up-to-date sound system and a whole stack of great cd's to
listen to. Come to think of it, got a goodly number of things that I
could/should be doing....instead of staring at the Dialog Box that just sits
there, promising to install the latest Critical Updates. You know that you
should just shut up and wait because you need it. Or do you....

You have to remember that 80% of people are part of The Herd.
The 80% of the population that is braindead.
So you work with the remaining 20%.
