Default micro-growing

I want to know the basics of what is being called micro-growing. Is
it just growing the vegetables to the sprout stage in dirt? Is it
closer to hydroponic growing? Is it always done in greenhouses, or
can I do it outside in the right seasons? Are there types of all kinds
of vegatables that will work or specific? I have read alot of the
postings on growing in winter, my problem is summer if I want to grow
lettuces and greens year round. I am zone 6 and it gets really hot
here for long stretches. Anyone have any experience with using misters
or foggers?
I am experimenting with growing lettuces in different mediums now, but
want to know what else I can grow. I have done lots of searching and
about all I come up with are recipes using them and articles saying
how wonderful they are...but not much on the how-tos.
Any info would be great!
