I would suggest to wait with blacking out the tank for a while. Leave this
as the last thing to do. This didn't prove to be very effective. Try one of
the water purifiers. I had a great deal of success fighting the gw with
Bedett Pond Clarifier which you can buy for $10 in the pool section of Home
Depot or Lowes. It does a great job and is harmless for the fish. Make sure
that you use a simple polishing filter like QuickFilter with Aquaclear
powerhead or something similiar to trap the debris. In my case the water
went from thick pea soup to cristal clear in 2 hours.

In case you still want to black out, switch off co2 since there's no1 there
to consume it in the darkness, so it might be harmless if you inject too
much. Plus it's beneficial to start pumping the air in the tank, since the
bacteria decomposing the gw might consume all the oxigen and the fish and
the biofilter may get severely starved in oxygen with all the common
consequences that you don't want to get.

If possible borrow or buy a UV Filter to put inline with your water
return. Run this for a few days to a week and see if the suspended algae
doesn't go away. The Polishing filter will work but can't rid you of all
of it for the long term

Thanks for your reply. I purchased a UV Sterilizer this week it has been on
the tank for two days and the water is clearing up considerably.
