nitrate build up question..
Hi folks,
I've got a planted 125 chichlid tank, and the nitrates are always off scale. It doesn't *seem* to bother anything, but I was wondering if this is normal for planted tanks. Nitrites, ammonia, etc all measure 0, so the bio filter is definitely cranking..... I've done water changes (50% weekly), but it doesn't seem to make any difference. I'm thinking this might be a result of the fertilizer spikes? Anyway, is this something I Should be worried about? any idea what the detrimental effects would be? thanks -JD |

nitrate build up question..
All fish and particularly Cichlids are sensitive to high Nitrate levels. Vacuum as much of the sticks out of there and do a couple of large wc's until they're at a more acceptable level. -- **So long, and thanks for all the fish!** "j.duprie" wrote in message ... I've done water changes (50% weekly), but it doesn't seem to make any
difference. I'm thinking this might be a result of the fertilizer spikes? ==== Could be indicitive of tap water having high nitrAtes... typical in some areas. ==== Anyway, is this something I Should be worried about? any idea what the detrimental effects would be? Test your tap water and see what you're starting with, then analyze your ferts, spikes to see if they are either adding to what's already there, or they're being disturbed in the gravel and releasing excess.. I had a problem with diggers and my swords... they would uproot the fert tabs and I'd have green water days later... -- RedForeman ©® future fabricator and creator of a ratbike streetfighter!!! ========================== 2003 TRX450ES 1992 TRX-350 XX (For Sale) 1987 TRX250R (sold) 1987 CBR600 Hurricane (sold) 1987 VFR700 Interceptor (sold) 1995 TRX300ex (sold) 2000 CBR600F4 silver/red (sold) *sniff*sniff* '98 Tacoma Ext Cab 4X4 Lifted.... ========================== ø¤°`°¤ø,¸¸¸,ø¤°`°¤ø,¸¸¸,ø¤°`°¤ø,¸¸,ø¤°`°¤ø,¸¸¸,ø¤° `°¤ø,¸¸,ø¤°`°¤ø "By US Code Title 47, Sec.227(a)(2)(B), a computer/modem/printer meets the definition of a telephone fax machine.
