Default Mature Hibiscus and Viburnum

We have mature Hibiscus and Viburnum both at maxumum growth size and very woody. We have been a bit slack in maintaining these over a few years. I need advise on how severe we can prune and how to prune so as not to kill them off. Also how do we look after them next year to get lots of colour?
