Default Jiffy seed pellets - any good?

Hello.

Are these pellets good for starting seed, better or worse than using seed compost?

Many thanks

love Jiffy pellets.........soak 'em, plant them, and plant them deep
enough to cover their necks to insure they don't wick moisture
away.........did beans with them last year. I also like to make my
own "seed tape" with paper towels and seeds and flour paste to seal
the edges.

I love them for starting seeds. I use the Jiffy-9 pellets for my
tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. These have no mesh, which
makes them a bit touchier to handle. (Always soak them and
let then sit for 24 hours before use and they are much easier to
move around without damage.) These are then transplanted to
larger pots to grow on before transplanting outdoors.

I use the Jiffy-7 pellets (these come in a regular and extra deep
version) for starting a few ornamental things that could use a bit
of a head start before going out (for example, 'Flying Saucers'
morning glory).

Most other things that I grow from transplants (zinnia, lettuce,
various crucifers) I start in 4-cell trays with germinating mix,
but these are smaller quantities, spread out through the year.
