Super Wide Plant Drill
I am looking for a super-wide plant drill bit, hopefully a minimum of five
inches wide. Here is one that is 2.75 inch wide: http://www.amazon.com/Yard-Butler-IR.../dp/B00EOMCM4W Does anyone know of an ultra-wide drill bit? -- W |

Assuming you are planting trees or posts you need a post-hole digger or augur. The bigger it is the harder it is to turn, the area increases as the square of the diameter. So a five inch is more than three times the work of the one illustrated not less than twice. For a long row these are heavy duty gear power gear often implemented as an attachment on a tractor or a specialised machine. The reason is that the amount of torque required to turn the bit turns the operator the same amount in the opposite direction. If hand held and you strike heavy soil or a tree root you will turn rather than a large bit. For just a few holes there is a hand-turned type of augur with horizontal handles that you and a mate push round but you still have to get the dirt out of the hole, it won't obligingly spew out like sawdust from a power bit in softwood. Or get a post-hole shovel. Some are just a narrow blade on a long handle some are like narrow pincers where you grab a chunk of dirt between them. D |
