I am new to this group and work for a manufacturer of pest control
products. I'm doing some research into asian lady bugs -- the ones that
become a nuisance inside homes in the cooler fall weather. I know this
topic has been discussed on this newsgroup in the past.

What I need to know is the geographic range of the problem in the U.S.
and Canada. If you have had a problem with asian lady bugs in your
home, could you please respond with your city and state, and any
additional information you'd care to provide about your experience. I'm
not trying to sell you anything, but it is my hope that we can create a
product that will offer relief from this pest.

but I forgot to inquire as to the 'ethnic' origin of them. I hope I got
native ones.....

Central Iowa...sounds like all of Iowa as well. We were told that they were
brought into the country to control soybean aphids. Also heard that they
have a three year cycle and should be gone after this year, but that may be
a rumor (although I hope it's correct!!). They are quite a nuisance in the
home. The only way I've been able to get rid of them is to vacuum them and
they smell horrible!

They can completely RUIN wine. It only takes a couple of them in a ton of
crushed grapes to completely make the wine undrinkable. They secrete a
very terrible smelly substance when threatened or crushed. They have a
tendancy to hide out in grapes that have been penterated by other insects
such as wasps. They are a MAJOR concern to grape growers and wine makers.

They are not the same as the lady bugs we grew up with. As kids we said they
were good luck if you found one in the house in the winter.
Any time I got one on me I always blew it away gently, now I smash it with
disgust.

Hopefully they are not selling the Asian beetles by the bag full. If they
are let me know, I have millions of them in the fall and could start a new
business.
From what I have read they were brought here to this country to assist apple
orchards insect problems

I am in Minnesota and regularly have millions and millions of them on my
house. Anyone along the Mississippi river says the same thing. They do seem
to have cycles, one year we had every inch of the house covered with them,
the next 2 or 3 yrs we have only half the house covered.

Does anyone know if the regular old lady bugs are still around? The kind
that are "fun" bugs.
I wonder if they interbreed with the Asian variety?

In Quincy, MI. for about 4 years now. Had to break down and spray(I know, not a good gardener) to kill them they were so think in the house. I'm talking hundreds of thousands of them!!

Before you put too much time into your research, check what products are
already out there for these pesky critters. The Extension here in Wisconsin
has a great factsheet on them:

And, they've been around here, Wisconsin, Zone 5, since @ '95.

They're here in northeastern Kansas. I hate the &*#$% things!!! I say kill
a lady bug, save an aphid!
