Are there any fragrant Phrags? I have a friend who is an experienced
orchid grower but who doesn't do newsgroups. She asked me to ask the
question.
I recall that there is one species that is reported to have some
fragrance sometimes. (Phragmipedium schlimii) Has anyone here ever
noticed any fragrance in any other Phrags? If so, which ones?

The list of fragrant orchids put out by the Canadian Orchid Congress
(http://www.canadianorchidcongress.ca/frag.html) says Phragmipedium
lemoinierianum and schlimii are fragrant. Lemoinierianum is listed as
"strong".

Thanks Reka, I'm sure my friend will find that web site interesting.
I know she owns a schlimii which she was told would be fragrant but it's
not. She also owns lemoinierianum and I believe she said it is in bloom
right now. I'll have her give that a good nasal inspection. :-)

Steve -
As someone also said this week -- sniffers are different. Have
several people check it at different times of the day. Some
plants are only fragrant early in the day, others only when sun
warmed. Some fragrances are not noticeable to everyone.

So it could be the hour she checks or one of the fragrances that
is not obtrusive to her. Good luck.

I've always heard that both schlimii and fischeri are fragrant (like raspberries) but my fischeri was not. I have yet to bloom my schlimii. However, my Beverly Fischer (St. Ouen x fischeri) is very fragrant of sweetened raspberries mid day, under warm conditions.
