SFOS Is Not the San Francisco Orchid Society... was SFOS Speaker's Day
Sometimes those Floridians have to be reminded that they are not the only

SFOS Annual Speakers' Day will be on Sunday, October 12, 2003 at the Fire Fighters Memorial Building, 8000 N.W. 21 Street, Miami. We have a wonderful panel of highly respected speakers presenting an enjoyable and educational program. Speakers' Day also includes AOS judging and SFOS Ribbon Judging (all points for Ribbon Judging will be doubled for this event). Plants for judging must be registered by 10:00 A.M. and can be picked up starting at 12:00 P.M. Speakers' Day has AOS approval for judging seminar credits as well. Several of our speakers will have plants to sell and authors will be available to sign their books. All sales will be open only to registered seminar participants. Tickets for Speakers' Day are $35.00 per person for SFOS members and AOS judges, and $45.00 per person for nonmembers. The price includes a continental breakfast and a sit-down lunch. This is one of the major orchid events held annually in South Florida! Be sure to register early since tickets are limited and sold on a first-come, first-served basis. The deadline for ticket sales is Tuesday October 7th, 2003. Tickets are not available at the door. To register, please send your check to the SFOS office: 10801 S.W. 124 St., Miami, FL 33176. You may also visit our website at www.sforchid.com This year's speakers a Bill Peters - Bill is an Accredited AOS Judge and the Training Coordinator for Student Judges in the Florida Caribbean Judging Center. The title of Bill's talk is " The Tolumnias: A Short History". Tolumnia is the new name for equitant oncidiums, which Bill has been growing, and breeding since the mid 1970's. Dr. Mark W. Chase - was one of the first plant taxonomists to apply DNA data to problems in plant taxonomy. The title of his lecture is: "DNA Sequences and Orchid Names" Harry Zelenko - is a painter, illustrator, writer and part time gardener. His work has been published and he has lectured and exhibited nationally and internationally, receiving many awards for his work. He is currently working on promoting the Quito Orchid Show & Conference as the International Coordinator, with Selby Gardens and Kew Gardens as co-sponsors, to be held from February 5th through the 8th of 2004. Harry will be speaking on "Oncidium". Dr. Kiat W. Tan - A recognized authority on Orchidaceae, Dr. Tan served as Director of the Orchid Identification Center, and Director of the Museum of Botany and the Arts at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota. Dr. Tan will speak on the "Orchids of Singapore and the Malay Peninsula". Michael Sinn- Michael Sinn, owner of Canaima Orchids in Caracas, has specialized in seed-grown Venezuelan cattleya species for more than 25 years. His plants are the recipients of many flower-quality awards from the AOS, Japan Orchid Growers Assn. and others. Michael will speak on "Venezuelan Cattleya Species and Their Habitats".
