Not a Binaries Group (was paphiopedilum seedling?)
Keith,
ISP's tend to restrict the volume (bytes) of messages stored on their servers. As that maximum is reached, a First-In, First-Out process occurs and oldest files are deleted to make room for newer ones. In the case of "text" groups like this one, as each message is relatively tiny, it means that they can be retained for a relatively long time, giving folks like you and me the opportunity to go back and look for older information. In the case of a binaries group, the files are typically quite large - except of course for the "nice photo" comments - so the life of a single post is quite short. Some ISP's treat binaries groups differently, clearing out files based upon how long they've been on the server, not just on the size limitation. Either way, the images are fairly short-lived. Refraining from posting binaries to test-only newsgroups is a matter of common courtesy. There is no law that says one cannot do so, but it shows disrespect for other participants who may wish to look at older messages. Think of it as a "societal norm" of the online community. Personally, I check the groups several times a day, so it would have little impact on me, but there are some that only log on at weekends, and they might miss messages that had been "pushed off" the list by the large files. (By the way, on binaries groups - I'll use a.b.p.o as my example - there is something of a norm about file size, so most of us try to remember to keep files to a "lowest common denominator" in terms of image dimensions, resolution (pixels per inch), and color depth (bits per pixel) so that the images aren't as fleeting, and are easily seen by others without the need for extra software.) If you cannot get binaries newsgroups through your current ISP, there are several free ISP's out there, and for a nominal fee you can subscribe to services such as Giganews, which has thousands of newsgroups. -- Ray Barkalow - First Rays Orchids - www.firstrays.com Plants, Supplies, Books, Artwork, and Lots of Free Info! .. . . . . . . . . . . "Reka" wrote in message ... "Rob Halgren" schrieb im Newsbeitrag ... Weed. It is a dicot. Not an orchid. Sorry. To the other question, orchids do self seed sometimes. It isn't a common occurance. Before science caught up to orchids, growers would attempt to germinate orchid seeds at the base of established plants. And they must have been at least somewhat successful, or we wouldn't have had any hybrids before the advent of orchid flasking. Now we grow 99.999999999% of orchid seed in flasks. P.S. This is not a binaries newsgroup. Please post pics to alt.binaries.pictures.orchids. Don't worry, we all do it by mistake once in a while, since the names of the posters on both groups are almost identical. :-) -- Reka http://www.rolbox.it/hukari/index.html "A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject." --Winston Churchill --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
