Default Fund Raising question

I am trying to think of a new fund raising project for a child abuse shelter
that I support. Our company just had to buy 20 pointsettias from a Rotary
Club member in our firm; they are not my favorite plant. However, it made
me think of selling orchids. Does anyone know of a source of nice, blooming
phals that we could sell? I don't have any idea of when we would try the
sale or how many we would need, I would like to find out if it is possible
and the approximate cost per plant (for 100 plants, 200 plants..) before I
pitch it to the Board of Directors.

Thanks.

Default Fund Raising question

The local branch of the American Cancer Society asked our society for
donations of plants in bloom for one of their recent fundraisers. The
fundraiser had a theme that orchids fit right in with. The blooming orchids
were placed in a display at the Gala Dinner and then given to people whose
lives had been affected by cancer. I believe the society donated 15-20
orchids and I know I bought 3-4 additional ones in order to flesh out the
display. They offered me a letter so I could take it off my taxes, but I
lost the letter and it wasn't that much to begin with anyway.

But I digress.

Orchids in bloom could cost anywhere from $12.50 per plant at a wholesaler
distributor (we have a company called Nurseryman's Exchange here in teh San
Fran Bay Area that people with a wholesale number can buy at) to $30 or so
if you buy retail from a nursery.

From whom did your company buy their poinsettias? A nursery? A plant rental
company? They would be a way for you to find out if there is a mass
wholesaler or flower market in your area from whom you could buy a quantity
of orchids in bloom.

Online is Carmela Orchids who will sell orchids in bloom but I have no idea
as to their costs. I know them to be very reasonable. You'd probably be
better off to call Hawaii and talk to Sheldon rather than dealing over the
internet. Its more personal that way and you can ask questions in real time.
He's a nice guy.

Go to the American Orchid Society webpage http://orchidweb.org and find the
affiliated orchid society in your area. Then contact them and see if they
can guide you to a wholesaler or if they'd be interested in donating plants
to your cause.

This is do-able, just a lot of phone calls at first in order to find out the
best way to proceed.
