Default Bad pump or filters?

We have a pondmaster pump/filtration system. I believe this is what we have
can't remember http://www.pondliner.com/PMK1500.htm. We use it only in the
winter, we run our 14ft. waterfall and larger filter during the summer. Last
winter was our first winter using the pump. It would run a month or longer
before the filter pads needed cleaning. We would pull the pump out for
cleaning when the fountian spray dropped down to the ponds water level. This
year the fountain spray drops within hours of cleaning the filter pads! So
we got new filter pads. Our fountain spray was high like it should be with
the new pads for about 3 days than it dropped like a rock. We pulled the
pump/filter out to clean the pads today about 3 hours ago and already the
fountain spray is almost down to the pond surface.
Are we dealing with a pump going bad? If it is going bad why did the
fountain spray stay high for 3 days (after getting the new pads) before
losing it's strength? My thinking is if the pump was going bad than the
fountain spray would not have stayed up and would have dropped within hours
just like before the new pads.
Any ideas?

These are absolutely worthless filters in my opinion if you have fish and
plants in your pond. I have one and don't use it. The pump is not the
problem, it's the filter - it clogs rapidly. Even using a coarse pad I had
to clean it once a week or more. It's not worth the trouble.

What do you suggest we replace it with? We used the pump/filter last winter
and would go easily a month before we had to clean the filters. Our 2 koi
were smaller than, we also have 4 gold fish. No plants tho' but do have
trees that drop their leaves in the pond. We try to scoop out what we can.

If this is just for winter mode you might want to put the pump either clam
shelled similar to: http://users.owt.com/jjspond/koipond/photos/set1/09.jpg
or in the filter without the pads, as long as there is screening to block
anything big from entering. The idea is to allow lots of surface area for
only small particles to pass thru, yet bigger particular can not clog the
entire surface at one time.

Next year you might want to seriously consider netting or screening the
pond:

I replaced it with an out-of-pond Tetra filter that looks like a dark
green barrel. It has bio-blocks in the bottom and a filter pad over
them. It works fine. But now we make our own out of old fiberglass
ammunition cases someone gave us. I buy the filter material at a
Aquarium-Pond store and in the bottom use whatever I have on hand,
mainly broken and small flowerpots and lavarock. Cost? About $10 for
the sack of lava rocks and filter material. Any large tote would work
including those heavy plastic ones sold at Wal*Mart and other such stores.

Default Bad pump or filters?

We are trying to figure out why all last winter this pump/filter set up
worked perfectly. We would
go weeks without having to clean the filters. When it was time to clean we
would lift the filter out
and there would be at least 1/4 inch of muck sitting on top. So it wasn't
any wonder why the fountian
spray wasn't high. This year with new filter pads (twice) the longest we've
gone is a week but average time
a few hours before the fountain spray gets lower (once the spray gets lower
the pump usually turns over).
When we pull the filter out the filter pads are hardly dirty, no muck, no
leaves, nothing just a little browned because
after all it was sitting in the pond. I am not convinced that the filter is
the problem yet but not sure how to troubleshoot
the problem.
We like to have this pump running during the winter for a couple of reasons.
One our pond is visable thru' our big
picture window so it is nice to look at during the winter. The second is
spring start up is so much easier when the pond
is already clean/clear of muck and junk. Our first winter with this pond we
didn't have a pump/filter, the pond looked disgusting
during the winter and spring start up was a nightmare.

Could there be something plugging up the connection from pump to fountain?
