No really. I had a bunch of them last year. Many were this dull brown color
and still are. At first we thought they were gambusia.

In my pond they are smaller versions of their parents and
they get their color young.

The GF population if left to their own devices will, over time, revert to a
type fish and colour. Type colour is a sort of drab dark olive|black.
Young "shubunkins" show their colours at an early age.
Cull out any young fish that you don't like the look of.
