Recently my SO and I found these Koi lanterns in a catalogue that was sent
to us. So we ordered four, two for us and two as gifts. Then we had the
bright idea of installing small halogen lights in them instead of candles
and using them as path lights at night. I built a sample and tried it out.
We've now ordered 12 more.

I love when I find stuff like this. Check it out:

Joe,

I hate to burst your bubble, but that is not a KOI lantern but a Goldfish
lantern. I have had one for years and I bought mine off Ebay for $15 plus
PH. The write up is correct though about its special place for the Japanese
and, also the Chinese culture concerning the Goldfish. On my Website you
will see a representation of Dragon's Gate Falls.

According to legend a Goldfish wanted to be more than just a thing of beauty
and so it tried to swim upstream looking for better opportunities when it
came to the falls in the stream. It tried and tried to swim up the falls
and it finally gathered all of its might and swam up the falls. The Gods
were so impressed that they rewarded the Goldfish and transformed it into a
Dragon, One of the most revered symbols in both the Japanese and Chinese
culture. Thus, this is the reason why the Goldfish is held in such high
esteem in both Japan and China.

The Lantern is a representation of the Fantail Goldfish.

they were getting rid of the summer stuff!
