Ciclids & Platys
Hi -
I've heard of people putting Ciclids and/or Platy's in thier ponds. Anyone know what the liveable temperature range is for these guys? Would they get along with small Koi (about 5-6" long)? I'm in zone 10b, water temp right now is about 50 deg F. I doubt it will get much below 45 degrees in the depths of winter, but this is my first year. Suggestions? |

Ciclids & Platys
We are in Jackson, MS. We run platies each year and see 20-30 become more
than a thousand by the fall. When it starts to get cold, we move the starters for the next year to a tank in my office. The rest become snail and fish food when the water goes below the upper 50's. Sad, but unavaoidable. We like the color of the platys. Our pond is too big to find or catch a particular fish, or set of them, so we don't put oscars in. Also, they might find the mosquito fish very taasty and we do not want mosquito bites. Actually, our gambusia also multiply like crazy and we catch hundreds of them to feed to the 14" Oscar I have in my office. We don't want the gambusia eating all the koi and goldfish babies.
