Pardon me for "butting in", but...

I've been hearing for decades sentiments like " I believe in civil rights,
but dislike the feminist movement".

I've come to believe [especially when coming from a woman] it has little to
do with not wanting equal rights, pay, etc. for women, and less to do with
the "movement" than with the word "feminist".

I don't "get" the distinction... but then there are soooo many things I
don't get". Is it the goals, Nedra, or the rhetoric that you dislike?

This "rhetoric" thing is coming up a lot at the moment, as you might
imagine, in my home state, Massachusetts. "Gay marriage" seems to be a
"hot-button" for some folks who, otherwise, are believers in human rights.
I've come to believe it's largely a semantic argument. Personally I think "a
legal union with the same rights and responsibilities as marriage" when I
hear it discussed, and use that terminology when I discuss it... it seems to
"push peoples' buttons" less, and people seem more open to level-headed
discussions.

Occasionally, by using different terms, I've discovered someone I've
thought a "world-class jerk" really isn't... not always the case, of course.

How funny...or irionic I guess. We were just discussing equal rights for
women at lunch. An associate and I were argueing that if women are allowed
to play on the Men's PGA tour, that men should be allowed on the LPGA. You
can imagine the discussion that ensued. And just to be clear, we were
argueing FOR women's rights, and equality, not against.

It isn't everywhere. It's a lesbian superiority or female superiority
movement in some places, especially colleges.

Double standards are common, and easier to see if you were male. The
old rules that favored women are demanded, and new rules that favor
women are demanded. The word of a woman is accepted over a man's
(domestic abuse cases, especially). Talk to young men about the
problem of actually getting a blood test run to determine paternity,
there's all sort of road blocks, and, if they can show they are not
the father, getting their money back takes a lot longer than losing it
did. Do these things sound like "equal rights"? or "Superior rights"?

Oh, and there's a good series of comics on the subject now running on
"Day-by-day". "Samantha's" problem is by no means unknown, I *know*
several women who have been tapped as the *father* of some child, and
had property seized and paychecks garnisheed, and been unable to get
it straightened out, even when they walked into the relevant offices.

Never mind the gold diggers in California that pull divorce court
robberies. (The average man is a social retard and the average woman
can fool him most of the time, long enough to get married, anyhow.)
It's no wonder men in California are marriage shy. They are afraid
they will end up impoverished the rest of their lives.

Then, you have the socialist activists who are using the movement as a
cover. Consider the National Organization of Women, and it's behavior
whenever a conservative is accused of sexual misconduct. Compare that
with the behavior displayed whenever a "liberal", or exploitable
minority (such as O. J. Simpson) is in the same position. Tammy Bruce,
who was a member of the national board of directors of NOW and the
president of the LA chapter at the time of the OJ Simpson mess was
forced out because she wanted to give OJ the same treatment as anyone
else.

... I'm in the male's corner!

That pre-supposes there is a "male corner" vis-a-vis this topic. Equal human
rights doesn't have to be a "male vs. female" thing, any more than a "white
vs. black", "liberal vs. conservative" [or any other "us vs. them"] thing
you know. It's about all human beings, it seems to me.

But, clearly, you don't want to discuss it... and that, of course, is
fine... this is rec.ponds after all.
