After three years of fighting green water, I am throwing up my arms in
defeat and counting my pennies to get a UV sterilizer.

So, what's the dish on these things? I researched a bunch about four
years ago, but perhaps technology has changed. My pond is 4500 gal,
full sun. No string algae....just the suspended tiny stuff. I would
run the unit off a separate pump from my regular filter system...have
a 1700 gph Leader available.

I live in Portland, OR, and there are some places I haven't checked
yet, but hope maybe there are some good $$ deals online. So, if anyone
can provide some source and tech info, it would be appreciated.

Haven't been on rec.ponds for quite some time. I notice Jan is still
here...HI! I'm also wondering if Vern is still reading. If so, how are
those koi I gave you looking?

Oh yeah, one last question. I have been going crazy trying to find
leopard frog tads to introduce....or ANY frogs for that matter.
Someone gave me a bullfrog, but it only hung around about a week. I
have teeny-tiny frog tadpoles of some sort, so I hope they hang here
and serenade. BUT, I'd really like some leopard frogs. Any source
suggestions?

It's good to be back to this group and see how MUCH it has grown.

Hi bahnee,
Vern dropped off the group. Many of us wondered what
happened to him.
Can't help with UV, I never had one.

Hey Bahnee, I have often thought of you. Vern dropped off several years
ago. I miss him alot. He was still taking care of your fish when he
suddenly
just quit. I see you don't have a web page .... I know the old one was
indeed
Old! ;-)
Where are you these days??

No UV - got past the stage where the pond needs one.

Last year I put in a Laguna Power Clear 1800[16 watt] to go with my
Laguna 5000 Power Jet. The Power Clear is installed outside the water
in a box. I just attached an long planter upsidedown on a board which
is elevated above the ground. It works great the water at the top of
the biofilter is really clear. It cost $89 at A.Z. Ponds a couple
years ago. Good luck.

If you are so inclined, AKCA has build-your-own UV articles, in one
of their books for sure, if not also on the web site http://www.akca.org/

When you make your decision, see if there is some way that you can pass the
water through some sort of mechanical filtration prior to sending the water
to the UV. It will work better that way if you can strain some of the
"solids" out first. When buying a UV, it's the water flow you need to
consider. You have a 4500 gallon pond in full sun; to save the $$$, you
could go with one designed for 4,000 gallons and use your 1700 gph pump. The
water will pass through slowly enough to get a very good "kill" ratio;
however, it may take a bit longer to work than if you purchased a properly
sized UV for the situation (which would be about 2X the size of the pond to
factor in "full sun"). Either way, you should see a significant change in
less than a week.

Hope this helps.

Have you tried stocking up on plants and -not- feeding the fish?

Seems to work great for me. I feed the fish once a week or so so they
get some protein, otherwise they eat roots, algae, and the occasional
hapless bug. Probably some of the zillions of fry and tadpoles/eggs as
well.

If any experts out there thiink I'm killing my fish, please let me
know.

We had a UV light on our smaller pond so hooked it up to this one, but we have
now unhooked it again. So far don't need it. We had a Laguna, it had a 16
watt bulb. You would probably need a larger bulb than that. I have seen in
the pond magazines a UV light that is also a spitter, frog or fish. Those
might be something to look into.
