great, and many want to build one too (to overwinter in the garage, or to
build into their deck or for their basement). I got tired of
photocopying sketches so I put the plans on my web site, and I'm posting
to share the design with everyone (not that I think it's that special,
but it was quick & easy to do, and seems to be popular). Incidentally,
it cost me about $400 cdn for the insert and the wooden exterior, - pump,
filters etc would be extra.

This is an interesting idea, But I don't seem to be getting the pics when I
visit the page. Where would I get something like the insert you mentioned?
Any advantages over a stock tank?

I was considering something like this for my basement, so I could upgrade my
GF home. Right now they're reaching 6", so their 55 is a little cramped.
Besides a pond would give me more landscaping opportunities. Although I
understand that an indoor pond can cause significant humidity. There is also
the cat factor to consider. They could care less about the aquarium, but a
pond might be a whole other kettle of fish.

I'm sorry to hear that you're not able to get the pictures. This is the
first I've heard of this problem. I'd earlier had the site tested on a
variety of browsers, so I'm at a loss as to how to fix this for you.
Perhaps someone else can offer suggestions, but in the meantime, here are

This particular insert is available from anyone who carries Laguna and/or
Hagen products, the part number is PT-796.

The primary advantages over a stock tank are width (accommodates longer
fish, like Koi), heating (low loss plastic), flexibility (any reasonably
flat surface to sit on) and cost (under a dollar per gallon).

I would not think that cats could be a significant problem, as the sides
go straight down. Unless the cat can do all its fishing from the edge,
it's unlikely to get any further. A method of raccoon control for ponds
is to have an 18" vertical drop at the pond edge, and this insert drops
24". As always ymmv.

The rate of evaporation could well be a consideration (20 sq.ft. of
surface ?) and will depend on your ambient humidity level, water
temperature and the amount of surface agitation. You could reduce it by
using floating plants (plastic unless you invest in serious lighting), or
incorporate some type of partial cover (clear painter's drop sheets?).

I ended up with an electric fence for the outdoor pond, which keeps the
coons out, but had no impact on the heron. The cats are declawed anyway,so
surface fishing should not be an issue, if I keep the water level down.

I kept Water Hyacinths in my 55 most of the winter, althouth the roots took
a beating from the GF. I had to reduce the lighting (AHSupply) time this
summer to keep the temps down in the tank and the WH are slowly dying off.
Another reson to move the boys to the cooler basement.

you net the pond to keep the fish in this will keep the cat out. I have a
dehumidifier running in the basement anyway. but to keep the pond water really warm
for cheap put a plastic tent over it and that stops the humidity. Ingrid
