Default The fish came up for aswim

In mid January the goldfish (not the koi) came up for a swim for a couple
of days and they have grown. I thought they more or less hibernated during
the Winter. Have they been eating algae?

Depending on the water temperature, as that governs their activity
(colder - slower, warmer - more active), fish will nibble at substrate
algae, find worms, aquatic insects, zoo plankton and other natural
goodies in the pond.
