Weeds that spread
I have a weed in my xeriscape, spreads via runners under the mulch, it can
grow at least a foot tall if I dont pull it, long leafed and some of the runners/roots are quite woody. Any ideas until i get a pic? |

... I think it might be ragweed... Oh gawd, ragweed. Last year I got exactly what you described. Searched and found it was common ragweed. Unfortunately I had neglected my yard during nursing school so I had a terrible, thriving crop of this stuff turn up in one section of my flower bed where I had no plants (ragweed is opportunistic and doesn't like to compete I guess). Now that I have the time I've been playing catch up. I pulled them, turned the soil and pulled out what roots and runners I could, and mulched heavily. I still have to go out there and yank up new ones that come through the mulch. What few of those weeds around the faster-growing established plants are spindly are easy to pluck or choked out and they don't grow back. Where I'm having the most trouble is around the new, small plants I planted this spring. Thank goodness it's a relatively small area but it's a pain to deal with. I think I'm getting the upper hand - just wish my new plants would hurry up and fill in the area. -- Catbird "Oh-oh, her schizo is about to phrenia" - Bob Hope |

... I think it might be ragweed... Yes, western ragweed (I accidentally called it common ragweed). Spreads from a woody rhizome you mentioned. -- Catbird "Oh-oh, her schizo is about to phrenia" - Bob Hope |

I must destroy it!
Think Roundup will reach down through the rhizomes? "Catbird" wrote in message ... "Latosha Washington" wrote in message ... I think it might be ragweed...
