I remember ( at 5 to 9 yrs of age) with reverence having been sent to my
Grandparents place in Western Colorado where Julius and Edla ( Scandinavian) had
only five acres, 1/3 of which was a cherry and Pear orchard. The middle 1/3 had the
House as well as a rental. in which we also lived for a few years after WW2.
Gardening and raising chickens was an ongoing thing. I learned everything I now know
fom my dear Grand-Parents who literally supported them selves with same! I learned
underground silo techniques for tuberous vegetables as well. Alfalfa was a big crop
to feed the Cow as well. Grandad mixed his own grains fo the best laying I've ever
seen from a small flock of several kinds of chickens. I also learned that cucumbers
grew larger and more flavorful with Rabbit Maneur..LOL! Fresg Green Peppers right of
the plant were like an heavenly fresh sweet treat as well..while the ones in stores
today are iccky! Rasberry bushes along the front with heavens fruit on them!

Concord Grapes vines on the North boundary as well as the back south. Fresh Grape
Juice always. Yes..5 lonely little acres CAN support anyone quite well if done so
assiduously. Both sour and sweet cherries in abundance.
They never wanted for food and often sold quantities to the then popular collective
markets.
I can also remember with anger when the entire 5 acres was sold when Grandad died at
age 96 and Edla put into a nursing home where she died at age 100. The trees were all
ripped out and an Apartment complex now occupies what was once a small Garden of
Eden! My own Parents both died at SUN CITY Arizona...a living Morgue if ever I've
seen one! ( their choice) B-0b1
