Default Wallflowers have failed this year, what else ???

My wallflowers have failed this year, after transplanting them they
have virtually all died. Not sure why. No problems with the clay soil,
they just rotted.

What else ??? can I put in thats the same height for winter/spring
colour. I do not mind perennials that can be moved later on next year.

Any ideas please.
