Default Phormium flower spike?

I'm wondering when the best time to remove the flower spike on my phorium is as its started to look a little tired, but i don't want to do anything that will stop it flower again next year.

Can you cut it off near the base now, or is it best to wait until you can easily remove it by pulling it off, like you do with the dead leaves?

thanks for your help!
