Default Elderberries

An article in the Telegraphs Gardening Supplement yesterday on the subject
of Elderberries very briefly mentioned that although they are full of
goodness, the berries should never be eaten raw --- though it didn't say
why.
Now this is news to me cos man and boy I've been chomping oodles of them
every season strait off the trees or sprinkled over cornflakes since never
mind when........plus gallons of elderberry wine of course.
Am I alone in not knowing that you shouldn't eat them raw ?
