Mahonia disease - any ideas?
I have a Mahonia x Media 'Lionel Fortescue' in my garden. Its a young plant
and is only approx 2 feet tall at the moment. It has developed some kind of disease on its leaves and, as I'm an inexperienced gardener, I've no idea what it is. Symptoms a many leaves with black patches which seem to be growing. Leaves eventually drop off. As I said, its only small and doesn't have too many leaves to lose! Can anyone diagnose and suggest a cure for this? Andrew Thomson |

Some kind of leafspot fungus, perhaps. Sanitation is very important for ailments of this general category. Go out and pick up all the fallen leaves and burn them. -- Rodger Whitlock Victoria, British Columbia, Canada |

Hang on... I'm confused.
One of you says "burn the leaves", one of you says "don't burn them". I've picked them all up, sprays the remaining leaves with anti-fungal spray and gathered all the fallen and diseased leaves into a plastic bag at the moment. "Rodger Whitlock" wrote in message ... I'm not sure about burning, is that not likely to mobilise the infective agent? pk |

Burning diseased plant material risks spreading the infection as unburnt bits of foliage become airborne. Incinerating at the bottom of a bonfire or a garden incinerator might work but my preference is to remove from the garden completely tot he local authority recycling unit which composts and sterilizes. pk |

Maybe Nick McLaren can shed some light? -- Rodger Whitlock Victoria, British Columbia, Canada |
