Default Cowslip seeds and Cherry Trees

Hello All,

I just hate waste, to a fault.

This art. - well, so far as the tree bit goes - is not so much for you old
hands, but for enthusiastic newcomers. I won't be telling the experienced
anything they don't know already. But, as a bit of a bumbling amateur, some
of you still might find something of interest here.

We moved to the wonderful place we are in, near Lydney, Glos., just 10 years
ago.

We have inheritted cowslips that come up in our lawn every year. Most years
I save the seed and, a year or two ago, I sent seeds to people who asked for
them.

-------

Every year cherry seedlings start and I usually just have to destroy them by
mowing. There are about 2 left.

I have had success, in the past, transplanting trees - several oaks and
cherries and the dreaded leylandiers !! The secret is usually to get them
early enough, when they are tiny, that is about now or earlier. But, if they
are much larger, get as much of the root as you can, remove up to 80% of the
top and move during the early part of Winter. This is to give them time to
develope roots, before the growth and dryness of the Summer come.

For larger trees (leylandiers), to save as much root as possible, I used a
ratchet winch, an old climbing rope, a pick and a grubbing mattock. The
purpose of the winch and rope was to put the roots in tension so that, as
you work around them with the pick etc. they slowly come free.

If any of you could be interested, please email me. Probably, all that i
would require at the time, would be a stamp for postage.

John N.
