He's an artist who has a studio right beside a weir at Lopwell and as we enjoy it in all weathers, we went over the moor. However, the temperature dropped about 4 degrees between here and there (he's fairly near the now-famous Crapstone!) The colours of the trees were much more intense over there and because it is, or was, all part of the Maristow estate, it's heavily wooded so the colours were just fabulous. We saw dozens of pheasants plodding about and on the mud of the estuary we saw a grey heron, an egret, some redshanks and numerous gulls and swans, including a black swan. You can see the Tamar bridge in the distance - it's a gorgeous spot. According to Robin, this global warming has meant that egrets are now extending their feeding and breeding areas and there's quite a flock of them in that area. Driving back to our side of the moor, we saw the trees still have quite a bit of green on them in places and aren't ready to fall just yet. It's less than hour's drive but the differences are quite marked. But I was SO cold that I thought I'd never get warm again. Stupidly, I'd taken only a fleece-lined gilet to wear over my jersey and I froze to the bone - low cloud and rain didn't improve matters but when we got home, I cranked the thermostat up and now feel a bit more human! -- Sacha http://www.hillhousenursery.co.uk South Devon (remove weeds from address) 'We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.' |

Someone once said that HM must think most of the world smells of fresh paint! Even when she opens a "new" building. They redecorated the 3rd floor of a building where I worked when she officially opened it. The building had only been in use 3 months. It seems to be a very British thing. I have been in buildings outside UK that royals have opened/visited where nothing was done except polish the floors prior to the visit. I used to work for a company that produced clothing for M&S. Any visitors from M&S were treated like royalty. On one occasion a scaffolding tower was erected and someone spent two days vacuuming the ceiling of the factory prior to a visit. Everyone was told to keep their desks nice and tidy and clear of clutter etc. Things all got rather silly. It did no good in the end though. British made goods could not compete with those from abroad. M&S switched more and more to cheap clothing produced in sweat shops abroad and the eventually all the UK factories closed. -- David in Normandy |

The corridor was decorated as was a loo for her personal use. She astounded the officials when she insisted she went off the newly decorated route, to the service corridor to have tea with the ladies in the staff canteen!! Of course everything which had been littering the "decorated route" was stored in the service corridor. The officials looked as if they were going to die of shame, I loved it :-) When EIIR visited the freshly decorated 3rd floor all her entourage tried to get into the lift with her. The lift went into TILT mode. -- Martin- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - You mean .... ?? Judith |

In 'real life' they have been known to experience a bit more than the scent of Dulux. There's a farm on the moor where Charles used to stay and work just as everyone else did - same living conditions etc. Generally, we don't get to hear about those things, which is just as well. The odd dose of normality must be essential if you live in such a goldfish bowl usually. -- Sacha http://www.hillhousenursery.co.uk South Devon (remove weeds from address) 'We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.' |
