I love carnations (dianthus). The first year that I plant, they smell
gorgeous; but I've noticed that the scent seems to disappear with age, even
though the blooms are just as prolific -- anyone else notice this, with
carnations or other highly scented blooms, or is it just too much shade?

Could be anything but certainly Mrs Sinkins doesn't lose her scent ever
and I've been growing it for years!

Thanks for replying. I have some white single-petal carnations (name long
forgotten) that bloom profusely but no scent this year. I was just curious
as to whether too much watering, too much shade, old age, etc. could effect
the scent of blooms as, in all my gardening books and magazines, I have
never come across this question.......Fido
