Default eleagnus collapsing

We have an Eleagnus angustifolia, the leaves of which are suddenly shrivelling and looking very sick. It is about 5 years in the ground, has grown very wel [almost too well], and this it totally unexpected.

Has anyone else had a similar thing happen? If so, did the plant survive or not?

In view of the extraordinary sudden death of Busy Lizzies this year [we lost a whole bed in two days], I do wonder if it may be some kind of airborne infection.
