I'm very envious Sacha, with such happy memories of our trip last
winter, and the sunshine!!! Enjoy.

Won't that take you over the Christmas period? In which case i hope you
both have a very happy one and we'll all be agog to hear about the
plants you see over there!

No, we're back just in time for me to have a Christmas panic. It would have
been easier to stay away longer. ;-) Thanks, Janet - we're getting very
excited about this now but I really do need to start thinking about packing
clothes that can be worn in layers - something I find very difficult!

I think I've gone into a sort of semi-rebellious state re clothes. I wear
jeans virtually every day of my life. They're quite unsuitable to my age
and I'm perfectly comfortable in them. I wear Dockside shoes because
they're comfortable, don't slip in wet weather and give at least a little
support to my narrow, feeble and weak ankles. I wear tops that involve
shirts or fleeces, or cotton jumpers, depending on the weather (I can't wear
wool) and if the weather gets colder, I put a cotton poloneck under the
fleece. For 'smart' , as in weddings or funerals I have a couple of good
suits and for evening wear, I just panic.

you won't need much of that here soon, leats not heavy clothing. Spring is
coming through fairly quickly in the north. A jacket to break the wind but
pack T-shirt & shorts if here in Nov & Dec. Something heavier if going south
island but not winter stuff. Don't worry too much about looking scruffy, we
are used to scruffy poms over here. My dad a good example.

I'll just chuck it all in a Tesco bag then. ;-) No, we're not bringing any
really cold weather stuff but as you say, just a couple of warmer things for
South Island.

Sacha

Hi, be extra careful to avoid doing what I did when I entered NZ about five
years ago.

I forgot to declare my walking boots - which was illegal lest they were
carrying foot and mouth or whatever.

They need to disinfect them if I can remember, and I almost incurred a large
fine at the customs going in.

I explained that I had been on a very long flight (almost non-stop) and was
dead tired and withn profuse apologies, I managed to escape with a very
severe repremand!

Have a good trip.

Keith

Portland, Dorset.

Our itinerary (after a few days in Xian) is Kerikeri, Napier & Hawkes Bay,
Wellington, Abel Tasman National Park, Wanaka, Te Anau, Devonport,
Auckland
- home! We've got places to stay in all these stops for a few nights and
then we're also at leisure in between stops to pick and choose where we
visit. We'll be away for around 6 weeks altogether and we are looking
forward to it like mad!

I don't know - I had a pait of 'Derry Boots' packed in my case (they are
sort of comfortable wellingtons suitable for walking) kind of agricultural.

They asked me if I had any boots in there, and naturally I answered yes -
which opened the can of worms. I had read about this on the plane when I
filled in the immig. form... but forgot all about it.

They didn't ask abouty whatever I was wearing at the time.

Have a wonderful trip,

Keith

I'll try to remember that but presumably it applies to all footwear that
might have been worn in UK! Thanks for the tip.

It's something like 25 years since we went to China. The Terracotta
Warriors are simply stunning - I can still see their hangar and the compound
outside with a few souvenir sellers - bet it's a bit more crowded now. We
went on an organised tour to China (pretty well the only way of going in
those days) and our movements were very organised.

We'll be following you to NZ just after New Year with a 2 month itinerary
(total trip time about 11 weeks what with Hong Kong and then driving CA1
from San Francisco to Los Angeles). The comment about shoes (not just
boots) is no joke. I did declare some the one time I've been there and
they did disinfect them for me. I seem to remember the question says
something about whether you've been in the countryside in the past x weeks -
now that I live in the country and get cows in the field next to the house
I'll probably be declaring *all* my shoes! On my previous trip I lived in
town but went walking regularly in the country - they do take it very
seriously.

Thoroughly clean all dirty sports gear, camping and outdoor equipment and
footwear you wish to bring before packing. This is especially important if
you have visited a foot and mouth disease infected area.

have a look at this, check under "3 - Biosecurity Notes" - other items and
miscellaneous.

Camping and sports gear isn't really 'us'! We're hiring a car and driving
around and I don't think much hiking will be done. But nonetheless, we'll
take your tips. Many thanks.

Yes, as a lot of our industry is agricultural-based and specifically dairy
and we don't have foot and mouth here. Be silly not to take things like that
seriously. :-)

I hope both Sacha and yourself have great holidays here.

Cheers,

We got our travel pack two days ago and the travel agents have done a
wonderful job. I examined the soles of my docksides yesterday and made a
mental note to scrub them and dig out the bits of grit sticking to them so
that I don't take half of Devon to NZ!
