Default Rhododendrons: how promote growth?

Any ideas on how best to promote rhododendron growth?

I put 13 in last autumn and they've surivived the winter well and
several are about to pop all over with their first blossom here. I
read somewhere that you should remove the flowers as soon as they are
finished in order to get greater flowering . . . but might that not stop
the rhodies bushing.

While it would be nice to have as much blossoming as possible, it's the
bushing that's more important in this situation.

Thanks.

Eddy.
