Default Greetings

Firstly, hello, I'm alan, 60 years young and just getting into gardening, can't understand why it's taken me so long!
I live in the east midlands, and am mostly responsible for the veg production.
Additionally, I am interested in adding to our boundary, by way of security and privacy. I am also quite keen to extend and renew a Lilac tree that has been growing for probably in the region of 40+ years. It's big, pretty healthy and prolific, but could do with some new growth I think. I'd like to extend it along our boundary. The question is, can I propogate it? can I take several cuttings and keep them in the greenhouse, a cold frame, or a convenient nursery patch. How long would it be before I could eventually transplant them?
I realise it will take a few years to achieve a decent size, but I think it would be worthwhile.
Do you think it would be within my capabilities?
regards , alan, from lincolnshire
