I think its Cytisus, possibly 'Porlock'

Broom. I see no reason to suspect that it is not the common Cytisus
scoparius.

Hillier's Manual says that 'Porlock' is very fragrant, so the OP could
use that trait to distinguish 'Porlock' from C. scoparius.

On the subject of scent, I was up in Scotland recently, and was struck
by the scent of gorse. What would you say that it smells of (other than
gorse)?

Some say vanilla but I detect coconut.

There's no smell that could be described as very fragrant.

Thanks for the help

Yes there is. Hoya Carnosa, but that's changing the subject from broom.
Sorry about that. Bigal
