Unhappy Bugs on my Pittosporum

Hello

I have a Pittosporum tree that is covered in large clusters of black 'pin-head' sized bugs on the trunk. There are scars all over the trunk indicating that they are eating the bark. The tree has just started leaking a substance as well which tells me that it is not well.

Any advice would be helpful as I cant find anything on the Internet about possible treatments/explanations.

I've tried to upload photos but dont seem to be able to. Am happy to email them direct if you would like to look.

I live in the UK.

Thanks in advance...

David, this is a non-binary newsgroup (look it up) so any attachments get
stripped out. As you post here via the web site Gardenbanter look up how you
post photos to their web site with a link posted on here or use one of the
free photo places like www.flickr.com and post a link here.

Try googling on pit scale in pittosporums. I don't know if this is causing
the leaking substance (which could be sap or a fungal flux), but it seems a
likely culprit for the other damage ... even though they're more brown than
black.
