Default Square foot gardening?

I was thinking of using a "spare" bit of garden for a veg type patch
and stumbled accross a website talking about "square foot" veg growing?

Anyone here use such a system and is it actually worthwhile?

The small patch I'm using for veg has pretty awful soil and is sunk
below the level of the path. If the veg I'm trying to grow now doesn't
come to anything I'll build a raised bed and give that square foot
gardening idea a go.
