but I didn't think that they dug much. gAny ideas?

Rats?

That's a damn big rat! gHoles made by them are 2-3" in diameter and
typically continuous - this was definitely made by a surface dwelling
animal looking for food, rather than for nesting.

We had ferrets nesting in our compost heap one year. gWear gloves!

For a ferret THAT size, I would need chainmail-reinforced gloves!

Well a 6inch hole sounds like rabbits to me.

True, but the holes were not the sort of thing a rabbit would dig,
and my garden is not easily accessible to rabbits - even if there
were many in the vicinity, which there aren't.

It's odd.

Nick Maclaren.

Can it be a hedgehog digging OUT of your heap? I know it's not the right
time of year, but stranger things have happened. Two holes might suggest if
it were a hedgehog, getting out for food then in again to continue
hibernation. Just an idea. I probably watch too many nature programmes.

Around here, it would be the right time of year. I've had (I think
based on droppings) two hedgehogs wandering around the garden for a
few weeks.

Cheers, Jake

Now, that IS an idea! There were a couple of very warm days at the
right time, too. Yes, that makes sense.
