If John Aubrey was right, it was probably laid on the ground for
a much less proper purpose :-)

In terms of weed control, there is a whole range available. Something more heavy duty might be required depending on the nature of the weeds. Take a look here at some: Weed Control, Ground Fabrics & Frost Fleece from DIY Matters.

Another thing to consider is the breathability and the requirements of the land it is being used on.
