Default Chaffinch and nuts!

I often put peanuts in shells out for jays. The nuts also attract a
few squirrels and magpies. The jays and squirrels bury the nuts in
shells to eat later. Very surprising visitors to the berried nuts are
chaffinches as they don't eat nuts! I can't see what they are doing.
Are they just checking up on the disturbed ground? It's almost comical
to watch the process.
