We have just had another family gathering for one of the birthdays and it
gave me a thought. A wife, 3 daughters and a daughter in law are all 'into
gardening'. Just as weddings are celebrated with 'something', starting I
believe with Paper for number 1 anniversary and Gold for 50, is there a
plant for a birthday?

The next birthday will be a 51. Any plant?

I doubt it would be practical to select a plant for every year. As with
anniversaries, the decades and 'special' ages (16,18,21) are a more
sensible approach. However, named roses are often suitable. I was once
given Rosa 'Happy Birthday', but I believe there is one simply called
the Birthday Rose. There's also R.'Life begins at 40' and R.'Fab at
50'. Otherwise, it's a case of looking for 'Congratulations', 'New
Dawn', perhaps 'Champagne Moment' and so on, or the Silver/Gold/Ruby
tags carried by many (wedding) anniversary roses.
For years in between these, simply select a plant the recipient
needs/wants; look to the birthday gemstones (Emerald'n'Gold euonymus
might suit a May birthday, Ruby "something" a July birthday).
You may, of course, allow that the poor soul might prefer to choose
their own plants and purchase a National Garden Voucher. Otherwise,
don't buy plants, but a special pot instead or a garden seat for a very
special birthday.
