Default Limestone chippings - kill plants?

Because of a 40 ft long laurel hedge we have been unable to grow many plants
in the flower bed at the base of the hedge. Will it be alright to put down
limestone chippings on some matting to keep back weeds. Will the chippings
affect the hedge?
Thanks
